AM - A Sour Ending

First I would ask everyone reading this blog to take a moment from their lives to remember the magic that is Duke basketball. Let us sit in silence for just a moment...

...

Now that I've had a chance to mourn the passing of Duke in the NCAA tournament, it's time, just as in life, to move on.

Here are the new standings of the crew's brackets. As you can see AlCa$h has pulled away significantly:

AlCa$h: 640
A. Monroe: 540
Cadillac: 490

Well let's have a go at the Final Four:

Alex's Final Four Picks

LSU

They were able to skim by, in my opinion, the best Duke team in years. They played a hell of a game. Texas is also a great team, but they won't be able to handle this powerful LSU onslaught.

Memphis

Talk about your all-time luck story. The Zags crapped out. Memphis won't, simple as that. Memphis is a very athletic team. UCLA...goodbye.

UCONN

The only one of my original Final Four teams still left. Duke: gone; Kansas: way gone; Boston College: edged out. If I want to have any dignity among my March Madness friends here, UCONN must defeat George Mason. (But I'm not too worried about it.)

Villanova

Villanova barely, and I mean BARELY snuck away with a victory against Boston College. Florida should prove to be a much easier (but not easy) opponent. Florida won't be able to handle the guards.

JC - Final Sore...I mean four...but I'm sore from being hurt so much by this tourney

Ok...here's my final four picks....Boston finally fell off the pedistool, and duke did not play d...but the d played them...lol...ok...moving on.

Texas
UCLA
George Mason...please...but probably UCONN
Villanova

Texas
They don't get the rematch of duke, but will still play strong. Texas faced the great shooting team of WV and won the game with a three. I guess the saying is true....you live by the 3, you die by the 3. LSU should be a tough team for texas but texas will prevail in a game that i don't think will be as close as the score shows.

UCLA
You say....but they barely got by the zags, and they looked like crap. I agree with you. That's why they're going to win. Memphis has had a cakewalk in...just like UCLA did before the Zags. UCLA will not have another crappy game as the have the whole world of momentum with them heading in. UCLA will show Memphis that the tournament isn't that easy...and should dispose of them.

George Mason
I have to go with the upset. They've knocked off Mich. St. NC, and now wichita st....i mean...it can only get better by knocking off UCONN...the cinderella story would only get better and I think it will. You say why George Mason? I say why not...when it just feels so right.

Villanova
The guard play of Nova will end Florida's wonderful run through the field. Hat's off to Florida, didn't expect them to get this far. Too bad it has to end here.

I'm just glad I haven't killed anyone so far...because the tourney is killing me.

Elite 8 Boys....time for the nitty gritty...i have 10 out of 16 teams left in the Sweet Sixteen...and have been heartbroken everyday of this tournament...so let's see if i've gotten any smarter.

Catlett's Elite 8

Duke
Texas
Memphis/Bradley...dang..tough
Gonzaga
Connecticut
Wichita St
Villanova
Georgetown

Duke
The blue devils will win this game but not with offense. This will be won with their defense. It has to be. LSU has the players that can neutralize sheldon down low and also have a jj reddick type player that can make the shots....so it will rely on duke's defense which was strong against GW to get them through.

Texas
Remember earlier in the year, 1 vs. 2....duke vs. texas...I want the rematch and I think texas does too. After getting shown up by 31 points I think texas will fight as hard as they can to get to the next round and show duke the improved team. Determination will help texas run over the Mountaineers.

Memphis/Bradley
I can't pick a winner here is my heart and brain are at conflict. Memphis is the better team on paper, but Bradley is the hot team as of late. Bradleys already downed kansas...which is in my final four, and pittsburg. Memphis has had an easy road of bucknell and oral roberts. The slipper has to fall off sometime, but when? This game I cannont pick because as much as I think I should pick memphis....bradley has a strong presence on the court and could easily dance on into the elite 8. I'll leave this one like this because I can't decide.

Gonzaga
I am a Zag fan, as I sport their hat quite often, but this game is a tough one. UCLA has had an easy road but they've shown that in the scores. I think this one is once again will you see determination prevail because Adam Morrison just plain wants it. He wants to prove that the team, and himself are for real, and he will do it in a win against UCLA.....going bold here....10+

Connecticut
This is a super tough one. Which huskie to pick....I have to go with UCONN only because they're UCONN. The name wins this time because this game will be close...maybe even in overtime. Washington has the second best player on the west coast, only beating be adam morrison, in roy, and he will be an impact. UCONN faces a scare but will prevail...I think...once again...this is a toss up and you have to go with the name.

Wichita St
I knew good things would come out of this team, as in once braket I have them going to the sweet sixteen and another the elite 8...I'm riding this team through as they are amazing at both ends of the court and hustle for 40 minutes....Wichita St by 10.

Villanova
Let me start by saying....Boston College's run in the ACC tourney and the championship game put them on a pedistool and I just now realize that. Everyone has been boasting boston college since that game when really they're a good team but not such of a great one as people think. You put BC on the pedistool and it's time for them to fall. Nova's gurads will dominate this one and Nova will knock the golden eagles back down to earth. I hope I'm wrong.

Georgetown
Wow...This might of been a stupid pick, but I think Georgetown slows the pace down and Florida will hurt having to run the half court offense and georgetown will thrive with it as it runs the princeton style o.

AS- The Exciting Entergetic Exuberant Exstatic Elite Eight

Al's Elite Eight:

DUKE
TEXAS
BRADLEY
GONZAGA
UCONN
WITCHITA STATE
VILLANOVA
GEORGETOWN

DUKE
This will be the last game the Blue Devils will win, LSU will give them a good game but I'll go with JJ in this one

TEXAS
This game will prove if the Mountaineers are contenders or pretenders. My guess is pretenders.

BRADLEY
The Cinderella story gets better with another upset of Memphis

GONZAGA
UCLA has had a cake walk into the sweet sixteen, Gonzaga will remind the Bruins of what NCAA tournament action is.

UCONN
Washington will give UConn a run for the money but I'll take the east coast Huskies in a close one.

WITCHITA STATE
Witchtia is going to show the world what the MVC is all about, they will walk out with an easy win over George Mason.

VILLANOVA
Probably the most evenly matched game thus far, but I still think Villanova is too strong. I'll take them in a double overtime win.

GEORGETOWN
If G-town can take out Ohio State, why not Florida.

AM - March Madness...More like March Sadness

After ending up only picking 9 out of 16 of the Sweet Sixteen correctly, and having one of my Final Four picks (Kansas) eliminated in the first round, I have hit the point of the tournament where I realize that I'm not quite as smart as I first thought. Congrats to AlCa$h, as he is currently leading our ESPN group. The standings are pretty tight though:

AlCas$h: 440
A. Monroe: 420
Cadillac: 410

Sno was unable to create a bracket in time.

Now that the first two rounds are over, it's time to post on what teams each commentator thinks will be able to survive their sweet sixteen opponents. I'll start off with my own:

Alex's Elite Eight Picks

Duke
Texas
Memphis
Gonzaga
Connecticut
Witchita State
Boston College
Georgetown

Duke
Duke has been one of the most consistent teams in the playoffs thus far. I haven't lost an ounce of faith. Duke will beat LSU with their killer combination of outside (Redick) and inside (Williams) scoring stars. Not to mention that Williams might be the only one who will be able to handle LSU's Glen Davis defensively on the inside.

Texas
More of just a hope that another upset won't happen. If they can stop WV's three, they're in.

Memphis
Another consistent one-seed. Bradley snuck into the Sweet Sixteen, but the Tigers are about to catch the mouse. You've driven me crazy for long enough now. Congrats on making it this far, but prepare for a wake-up call.

Gonzaga
UCLA has had an easy road to the Sweet Sixteen. Time for the Bruins to meet their match.

Connecticut
I wasn't really expecting to see Washington in the Sweet Sixteen, but I believe UCONN will deal with them as efficiently as they would've dealt with the Illini.

Witchita State
Now here is a surprise. This will be the battle of the Cinderellas. A real catfight. Go Missouri Valley!!!

Boston College
Without a doubt the hardest pick. The Madness rages on. They will face Villanova with their quick guards, but I think BC can handle the onslaught.

BC is a good inside team that plays good defense, and they don't get tired.

Were talking about a team that has shown they can easily run with Duke. We could be seeing an ACC Championship rematch in the final game, but for now I'll just take BC to face Florida in the Elite Eight.

Georgetown
I do think that Florida is a fantastic basketball team, but as I'll be rooting for G'Town to thwart some of my bracket opponents, I'll also take them to advance.

AS - Twin Cities (really just Minneapolis but St. Paul is really close)

1Villanova vs 16 Monmouth - 1Villanova
I orginally had Hampton winning this game(j/k), but since they lost the play-in game, I'm going to have to go with Nova. If Allan Ray is 100%, Nova will take this region.

8Arizona vs 9 Wisconsin - 8 Arizona
Arizona is down greatly this year but they are still a basketball powerhouse. I'll take Arizona in a close one

5Nevada vs 12 Montana - 5 Nevada
A 12 over 5 upset?........No, Nevada made it to the sweet sixteen two years ago, so I think they can pull it out.

4 BC vs 13 Pacific - 4 BC
This one is a no brainer. BC almost won the ACC tournament and I know very little about Pacific.

6Oklahoma vs 11Wisconsin-Mil - 11 Wisconsin-Mil
Wisonsin-Mil are upset kings, look for them to sneak past the Sooners.

3Florida vs 14 South Alabama - Florida
Never heard of South Alabama but I'm guessing their mascot is something like the Dolphins. Flipper is not taking down the Gators.

7 Georgetown vs 10 Northern Iowa - Georgetown
I'll take Georgetown, they are a 7th seed that should be higher.

2 Ohio State vs Davidson 15 - Ohio State
Don't know much about Davidson but they usally make the big dance. Still they're not taking the Buckeyes down this year

JC - Atlanta Baby

Ok...I got the good old Atlanta Region so let's do this bad boy.

Duke(1) vs. Southern(16): Duke
Duke starters could probably take this game off as it will be over 10 minutes in

Geo. Washington(8) vs. NC-Wilmington(9): NC-Wilmington
This game should be close but I see GW taking an early exit.

Syracuse(5) vs. Texas A&M(12): Syracuse
God has come back to earth...and he is in the form of McNamara playing basketball. Need I say more?

LSU(4) vs. Iona(13): LSU
This one is a no brainer....Unless there's another hurricane I see Iona storming out in the first round.

West Virginia(6) vs. Southern Illinois(11): West Virginia
One of the tougher picks I think out of the first round, but WV and pittsnogle will be able to get pass SIU. SIU will make the missouri valley proud on the way out though.

Iowa(3) vs. Northwestern State(14): Iowa
Another no brainer in the first round...Iowa cruises into the second round.

California(7) vs. North Carolina St(10): North Carolina St.
A minature upset here but expereince will prevail as cal hasn't been in since 3 years, while this state squad made it to sweet sixteen last year.

Texas(2) vs. Penn(15): Texas
A loss in the big 12 championship won't get texas down as they should fly through this game and win by 10+.

That's the first round...let me know where you agree and disagree and i'm always open for change.

AM - Welcome to Oakland

Cadillac took dibs on the Atlanta regional so I'm laying down Oakland for you.

Memphis 1 vs. Oral Roberts 16 >>> Memphis 1

Memphis is a no-doubter.

Arkansas 8 vs. Bucknell 9 >>> Bucknell 9
Bucknell has looked strong in every game I watched them in this year. It won't be a blowout, but Bucknell will advance.

Pittsburgh 5 vs. Kent St. 12 >>> Pittsburgh 5
I've heard some people argue this for the 5-12 upset, but I can't get Pittsburgh's win over Villnova out of my head. Pitt is just too consistent to get upset here.

Kansas 4 vs. Bradley 13 >>> Kansas 4
Haven't really seen much of Bradley, but Kansas just won the Big 12 over Texas. Right now they look unstoppable.

Indiana 6 vs. San Diego St. 11 >>> Indiana 6
Probably the hardest pick in Oakland.

San Diego St. looked strong in their tournament, but I'm not entirely convinced. One of my more uncertain picks, but I'm taking Indiana.

Gonzaga 3 vs. Xavier 14 >>> Gonzaga 3
As amazing as Xavier looked in their tournament, the Zags and Adam Morrison won't be stopped in the first round. I'm giving Morrison 30+ in this game and the Zags the victory.

Marquette 7 vs. Alabama 10 >>> Alabama 10
Too close to call...so of course I'll take the upset.

UCLA 2 vs. Belmont 15 >>> UCLA 2
Bruins by 10+.
